Project preparation & process
Do I need to prepare my home before you start?
We handle all the painting preparation, including surface cleaning, sanding, filling, and priming.
Please remove personal items and valuables from the areas being painted, and ensure we have clear access to the work areas.
How long does a typical painting project take?
Project duration depends on the scope of work. A single room might take 1-2 days, while a full exterior repaint could take 1-2 weeks.
We’ll provide a clear timeline when we quote your project.
How many coats of paint do you apply?
We always apply at least two coats of paint, and sometimes three, depending on the colour change and surface condition.
This ensures even coverage, proper colour depth, and maximum durability.
The first coat seals and primes, while subsequent coats build depth and protection.
Will you move furniture?
We can move smaller furniture items as needed, but we recommend moving large or valuable furniture pieces before we arrive to ensure they’re protected.
Do you clean up after the job?
Yes, absolutely. We leave your property neat and tidy at the end of each day.
Final clean-up is included in every job, and we won’t consider the work complete until everything is spotless.
Do you use primer?
Yes, where needed. Primer is essential for new surfaces, porous surfaces, when making dramatic colour changes, or when painting over repairs.
It creates a uniform surface for better paint adhesion and more even colour coverage.

All about paint!
What's the difference between water-based and oil-based paint?
Water-based (acrylic) paint is now the preferred choice for most residential painting in Australia. It dries faster (2-3 hours), has low odour, doesn’t yellow over time, and is more environmentally friendly with lower VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds – chemicals that evaporate into the air).
Oil-based (enamel) paint takes 6-24 hours to dry, has a stronger odour, and tends to yellow over time, especially in low-light areas.
We primarily use water-based Wattyl paints for their durability, flexibility, and eco-friendly properties.
What paint finish should I choose - matte, low sheen, or gloss?
The right finish depends on the room and surface:
- Matte (flat): Best for low-traffic areas like bedrooms and ceilings. Hides imperfections but is harder to clean.
- Low Sheen: Ideal for living rooms, hallways, and bedrooms. Easy to clean, durable, and has a subtle sheen. Our most popular choice for interior walls.
- Semi-gloss: Perfect for kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms where moisture resistance and easy cleaning are important.
- Gloss: Best for trim, doors, window frames, and cabinets. Very durable and easy to clean, but shows every imperfection, so it requires perfect surface preparation.
What's the best paint finish for kitchens?
Satin or semi-gloss finishes are ideal for kitchens.
They’re durable enough to withstand frequent cleaning, resist stains and splashes, and handle the heat and moisture from cooking.
Semi-gloss is particularly good for areas near the stove and sink.
Why does paint finish matter?
Paint finish affects both appearance and practicality.
Higher sheen levels (gloss, semi-gloss) are more durable and easier to clean, but show surface imperfections.
Lower sheen levels (matte, satin) hide imperfections better but are harder to clean.
The right finish protects your investment and makes maintenance easier.
Do you use low-VOC or eco-friendly paints?
Yes, the water-based Wattyl paints we use are low-VOC and more environmentally friendly than traditional oil-based paints.
If you have specific environmental concerns or sensitivities, we can discuss ultra-low or zero-VOC options.
How long should exterior paint last in Brisbane?
With proper preparation and quality water-based paint, exterior painting should last 7-10 years in Brisbane’s climate.
Factors affecting longevity include sun exposure, surface preparation quality, paint quality, and ongoing maintenance.
Can you paint acrylic over enamel?
Yes, but proper surface preparation is essential. The enamel surface must be thoroughly cleaned, lightly sanded to create tooth for adhesion, and primed appropriately.
Without proper prep, water-based acrylic won’t adhere properly to oil-based enamel and will peel or fade quickly.
What's the best paint finish for bathrooms?
We recommend satin or semi-gloss finishes for bathrooms.
These finishes resist moisture, prevent mould and mildew growth, and are easy to clean.
Semi-gloss is best for high-moisture areas like shower recesses, while satin works well for general bathroom walls.
Always use moisture-resistant, water-based paint formulated for bathrooms.
What paint finish is best for exterior walls?
Satin (low sheen) is typically the best choice for exterior walls in Brisbane.
It balances durability with appearance, resists dirt and moisture better than matte, and the slight sheen adds depth without being overpowering.
Matte can be used but shows dirt more easily. Gloss is generally only suitable for trims, doors, and feature details.
Are water-based paints better for the environment?
Yes, significantly. Water-based paints contain fewer volatile organic compounds (VOCs) – typically under 50 grams per litre compared to over 300 grams per litre in oil-based paints.
Lower VOCs mean less harmful emissions, better indoor air quality, and reduced environmental impact. They’re also easier to dispose of responsibly.
Which lasts longer - water-based or oil-based paint?
Modern water-based acrylic paints actually last longer than oil-based paints, especially in Brisbane’s climate.
Acrylic paint is flexible and can expand and contract with temperature changes without cracking.
Oil-based paint hardens over time, becomes brittle, and is more prone to cracking and chalking.
Water-based paint also retains its colour better and doesn’t yellow.
How long should interior paint last?
Interior paint typically lasts 10-15 years in low-traffic areas and 5-7 years in high-traffic areas like hallways and children’s rooms, depending on the finish and level of wear.
